DETROIT- The 2013 opening weekend series for the Detroit Tigers against the New York Yankees is expected to be a homerun for the city.
The Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau estimates the Tigers’ first three-game home stance at Comerica Park, which starts today with the team’s home opener, will have an economic impact of between $13 and $15 million, including at least $5 million during Opening Day.
“It’s a great day for the city because emotionally it’s uplifting,” said Michael O’Callaghan, executive vice president and chief operating officer for the bureau. “It certainly helps all these people who work in downtown Detroit.”
The estimates include all direct spending within the stadium, restaurants, cabs, taxes, hotels and everything in between.
O’Callaghan said when Comerica Park sells out, direct spending in downtown Detroit is about $4 million.
In 2012, the bureau estimates the Tigers playing in downtown Detroit equaled direct spending of $285-$300 million for the city.
Numerous restaurants and bars told MLive.com that Opening Day is the biggest day of the year for them.
“We’re certainly busy for all Tigers games, but this is by far the biggest day of the year for us,” said Josh Guitar, general manager of Detroit Beer Co., 1529 Broadway St.
Guitar said the restaurant and microbrewery — located two blocks away from the Tigers’ Comerica Park — traditionally does two to three times more sales during the team’s home opener than a weekend game during the summer.
The Detroit Tigers will take on the New York Yankees starting at 1:08 p.m. Friday for their home opener in Detroit’s Comerica Park.
