NM, nation adding ‘green’ jobs

The U.S. economy had 3.4 million green jobs in 2011, an increase of 157,746, or 0.1 percent, over 2010, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday.

Green goods and services jobs — goods and services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources — make up 2.6 percent of the nation’s jobs, the BLS added.

The manufacturing sector had the most green jobs — 507,168 — while the construction industry had 487,709.

New Mexico boosted its number of green jobs in 2011 by 1,453 to 24,337. Green jobs represent 3.1 percent of all jobs in the state.

California had the most green jobs at 360,245, while North Dakota had the fewest at 9,481.
